Andi Prommegger began his career as a skier, but switched to the sport in 1992 and has since appeared as a snowboarder. The first competitions he graduated two years later. In 1995 he was admitted to the Salzburg provincial squad and made his debut in 1997 – now a member of the B-squad of the Austrian national team – in the World Cup. Prommeggers best finish this tournament run long remained a 19th Rank, which he reached in November 1997 at the parallel slalom in Soelden. Just over two years later the Austrians scored his first World Cup top ten result, an eighth place in the parallel slalom in Tandådalen. During this time, the 20-year-old had several years of junior world: In 1998, he had missed a medal at the World Junior Championships in fourth place just a year later he won the silver medal in the parallel giant slalom and 2000 he was in this discipline as well as in Parallel Slalom Junior World Championship title win.
